It is very important that you follow the NPO Guidelines that are given to you.  Patients may vomit under anesthesia if they have food or liquid in their stomach.  This can lead to the vomit going into the lungs and causing a life-threatening pneumonia.  Follow the instructions provided by the nurse who calls you the day before.

PROPOSED NPO GUIDELINES BASED ON AMERICAN SOCIETY OF ANESTHESIOLOGISTS RECOMMENDATIONS THAT MAY BE IMPLEMENTED IN 2014 AFTER EDUCATION AND TCH PERIOPERATIVE CONSENSUS IS OBTAINED.
